• A float and trowel may look the same and even be referred to each other as the same tool, but in fact they are two different tools, with distinct differences. A trowel is used to produce a hard, dense, and shiny smooth concrete surface. A float is used to push down or embed the concrete aggregates while floating the concrete "creme" or mortar to the top, for a level smooth surface. Floating will always be a necessary step in finishing, but troweling will not. The type of finish produced by a trowel is most commonly seen on garage floors or basement floors. It is important that using a trowel is always done in the proper sequence. If not done after floating and at the right time, a trowel will seal the concrete prematurely locking in bleed water which causes imperfections down the road.
